You should use 2 USB ports for the portable hard drive units (anything that starts with BP).
Many systems will work with only 1 USB plug, but there is a chance of damaging the port.
USB ports are designed to deliver up to 500 milliamps of electricity to devices that don't require much current to operate.
More demanding peripherals, such as the larger (desktop) external hard drives,
use a wall plug and power supply to get their electricity.

The portable hard drive BACKUPKEYs use laptop drives,
which require less current than desktop drives.
However, they can still pull 1000 milliamps, particularly when starting up.
If the drive is pulling more current than the port is designed to provide,
there is a chance of either burning out the port or not running the drive correctly.
